This morning, we finish our study of Nehemiah. In chapter 12, we run across an encouraging phrase: “And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.” (Nehemiah 12:43)
As they dedicated the walls with choirs and musicians, people in the surrounding areas were familiar with their joy. In a similar way, the people of God today stand out because of our joy. Not because of the volume of our choirs, but the joy that we demonstrate in our lives. And joy is most evident during the difficult seasons of life.
As we pray for Trinity Church, let’s pray that we will be filled with joy. In some ways, this is a difficult season at Trinity – which makes this a great opportunity to see joy in our lives. We also read in Nehemiah that “the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10) and we know from Galatians 5 that joy is part of the fruit the Holy Spirit develops within us.
Join me in praying that Trinity Church will be characterized by joy. And that joy will be “heard far away”.
