I have two grandchildren who are turning two in December. Both are learning to walk and talk, feed themselves, and many other things. I love scooping them up and walking about through a park. But it won’t be long before they will want to ‘do it themselves.’
The danger for us adults is that we can say the same to God: I can do it myself. Yes, some things we should ‘do ourselves.’ But when it comes to “bearing fruit that lasts”, Jesus told us that “apart from me you can do nothing.” As we launch out, when we are hoping to bear fruit, are we truly believing that He brings the harvest and, are we putting ourselves in places where ‘apart from God we can do nothing?’ Jesus said one thing in key: “Ask and it will be done” (John 15).
